Hollow Wall Anchors | Copper State Bolt and Nut Co.

Dec 10, 2015

Hollow wall anchors open up a world of possibilities independent of wall studs by allowing you to obtain strong holding power in locations where plaster, wallboards, plywood, hollow tile, or concrete block covers the inside of a hollow wall. As the anchor is inserted, it opens up and expands on the back side of the wall to achieve the “fix” needed to support hanging objects such as shelves, mirrors, pictures, etc. Choosing the proper size, style and weight capacity of each anchor will ensure trouble free installation and years of hassle free use.

Choose the Proper Size for the Width of Your Wall

In order for a hollow wall anchor to properly open up behind the wall, it has to be the proper length in order to achieve the needed bite. Anchors come in a large variety of lengths and widths; be sure to select your anchors based on the width of the wall you will be installing them within.

Larger Spreads Support Greater Loads

The weight of the object the hollow wall anchors will be required to support also needs to be taken into account when selecting an anchor. Anchors with a larger “spread” have greater holding power than those with smaller spreads, so be sure to check the weight capacity of each style. If you will be using more than one anchor to support an object, divide the total weight of the object among the weight rating for each of the anchors to ensure you have enough support.

Anchors Can Be Installed With or Without a Setting Tool

Depending on how often you plan on installing hollow wall anchors, you can choose to install them with either a hollow wall anchor setting tool or with a simple screwdriver or drill. While both methods are equally effective, the former is faster and can save significant hassle in situations where many hollow wall anchors will be used.
